Birmingham Design Festival Launch

The Birmingham Design Festival 2021

The Birmingham Design Festival comes rolling into town each year (bar 2020, for reasons we are all aware of!) to showcase the best work and talks of international and local talent from across the region. This year’s festival celebrates colour and to launch the festival the gang at Birmingham Design Festival invited 100 local illustrations and designers to create a wonderfully colourful poster to celebrate the region and its creativity.

A few weeks ago, some of the team took a trip to the launch event at the Custard Factory in Digbeth to have a look at some of the vibrant, colourful pieces on show. With 100 different designers each creating a poster of their own it was amazing to see the different styles and interpretations of the brief from purely typographic pieces, to illustrative, collage, and graffiti.

Poster at Birmingham Design FestivalWe also popped along to support our Design Director, Mattie, and his contribution ‘Spotlight’. Spotlight does what it says on the tin and puts a large spotlight over a creative city that is often overlooked, highlighting its buildings, attractions, and unique quirks.
Using his traditional geometric style, Mattie filled the highlighted area of his design with large colourful shapes that follow a gradient to become darker and darker down the design. There may also be a few small nods to local businesses, festivals, and graffiti if you can spot them.

After the exhibition, each poster was auctioned off raising over £600 for local Birmingham-based charities! Big round of applause to the Birmingham Design Team for putting on the exhibit and all contributors who showcased their incredible work.
